Kahurangi National Park

kahurangi-national-park-infoKahurangi Park is found on the North-western part of the South Island. It boasts of a diverse landscape as its terrain is composed of high plateaus, marble outcrops, natural stone arches, and deep limestone caves.

These are wonderful sights dotting on the interior of the Islands, they offer breathtaking sights and great landscapes and terrain for hiking.

The Park is famous for exploring its 570km tramping track. You can take on the Heaphy Track, which is 82 km long. The track covers terrains extending from the goldmine valley and ends on beautiful coastline. You will be able to cover mountain ranges, open tussock and sub-tropical forests. On average, the total trip will take 5 days.

Wangapeka and Leslie-Karamea Tracks are incredible as they cover extensive land where you can be able to see great wilderness in the interior and end up on the West coast.

Kahurangi is home to beautiful rivers where fun activities such as fishing, rafting and kayaking can be enjoyed. This is a great place to experience deep limestone caves and marvel at the incredible structures carved by nature.

The diversity of Kahurangi is clearly evident in its wide variation in nature and vegetation. Experience the desert conditions, mountainous vegetation and the sub-tropical forests.

The park is home to a number of wildlife animals, which you can enjoy. Catch wonderful spectacles of over a hundred bird species. Huge cave spiders reside in these areas, as there are a number of carnivorous snails.

Kahurangi is home to the oldest fossil found in New Zealand, which dates back 540 million years. Don’t escape the glance of the fossil. Enjoy a hike on one of the tracks in the park and learn on the history of the Maori trails, gold miner’s paths and European explorer’s routes.

This is a great way to learn of New Zealand’s history and tales of the people who inhibit the land.
