Parapoa National Park

punakaiki-informationParapoa National Park is found on the central part on the coastal land of Punakaiki. Its position on the coastal land offers breathtaking views and it’s relaxing just being in this wonderful town.

There are beautiful natural features on the coastline. Dolomites Point is one spot where you can catch a glimpse of limestone outcrops that are a result of crystallization of lime over long periods of time.

Enjoy interesting carved structures of the stones, if you are lucky you can revel in the sight of natural geysers. Water from the ocean during high tides gets blown through the crevices thus creating this effect.

Limestone structures also known as dolomites are a common site in Punakaiki. The weather conditions, moisture and natural deposits favor natural formation of such structures, they are beautiful to look at and they add to the uniqueness of the landscape.

The coast is a bevy of activities such as fishing, swimming, canoeing. The coast is lined with great palm trees, take leisure walks and enjoy the waters; it’s a good way to relax after a busy day.

Guided tours are conducted inside deep caves located along the coastline; popular caves such as the Aranui caves can be accessed. This coastline is known to be the nesting grounds for Westland black petrel. They are very rare and this is the only site in the world where they lay and hatch their young ones.

Punakaiki has two great tramps, the Inland Pack Track and Croesus Track. They offer incredible hiking and adventure filled routes. You can take an average of two days to complete either track.

The interior of the park is amazing; it’s full of limestone carvings and structures. There is great vegetation cover that makes up beautiful sceneries. Wild and indigenous trees make beautiful canopies that are home to numerous bird species.
