Mount Victoria

Although it is only eighty-seven meters high, Mount Victoria is the highest volcano in North Shore in New Zealand.

The last eruption dates back 20,000 years. Its lava flows today mark a major part of the coast line from Devonport. An important Maori pa (or Mount Victoriavillage) once stood on its slope; now only a few remnants of the pa’s earthworks are preserved.

The mountain is named after Queen Victoria. Mount Victoria offers good views of both the Waitemata Harbor and the inner Hauraki Gulf.

Over the years, the top and the upper part of the slope have been the locations for a signal station, artillery positions, and various concrete bunkers, some of which date back to the early 1870s.

One of the bunkers is now used by the Devonport Folk Club. The local tennis clubs also have facilities located on the slopes of the hill.
