Naseby

Naseby is a small community, and a former borough, in the Maniototo area in Central Otago on the South Island of New Zealand. It is named after the village of Naseby in Northamptonshire England.
Naseby gained importance during the Otago gold rush of the 1860s. Large parts of the sites from this period have been preserved and give the city the atmosphere of an inhabited museum. At its peak, the town had nearly 4,000 residents; after a change of municipal boundaries was put in place in the 1980s, the town was New Zealand’s smallest borough, with only about 100 residents. Naseby had 114 inhabitants in 2009.
Today, peace-seeking tourists visit the city. The nearest town is Ranfurly, about 15 km away.
The winters in Naseby are, by New Zealand’s conditions, very harsh.

Curling events are held in Naseby. Curling is one of the most important sports in the country.
