The Wonderland of Kaitaia

the-wonderland-of-kaitaiaThe city of Kaitaia is situated in the northernmost region of New Zealand. It is popularly known as the ‘commercial heart’ of North. Kaitaia, the word literally means ‘an abundance of food’ in Maori, and it sure stands by its meaning given that it has vast sprawling lands and habitat for birds, along with the age old Kauri forests and the supply of fish shellfish and plentiful of other seafood in huge supplies found in the beach spread across vast-lands of the 90 Mile Beach.

Kaitaia is the place where you can begin you can begin your journey to a beach, well known for its exciting day outings, called as Cape Reinga. Moving down south, you can also drop by a visit to the visitor centre and the Far North Regional Museum.

The 90 Mile Beach, which is actually close to around 90 kilometres length-wise, is by far the most famous beach of New Zealand. During low tides, the sea gets swept off far away with just the sand stretch across layers and acres of infinity/

You get to experience ultimate solitude when you are walking on the golden sand dunes with the waters continuously lashing your feet. During peak tourist seasons, you would mostly see a frantic herd of coaches on the urban expressway as a normal course of routine. In spite of it being christened as the ‘Desert Coast’ by Captain Cook, as he navigated past the beach in 1869, the beach is still absolutely stunning in its virgin gorgeousness.

You can get to the 90 Mile Beach in two routes from Kaithaia. At the North is Waipapakauri, which is a port for the ‘world’s biggest surf-fishing’ competition, which is held every January, with more than a thousand ardent fishing fanatics, all decked up in wetsuits or oilskins, bravely face the wrath of the Tasman Sea, claiming a section of the sea’s reap.

Travelling down south, approximately 14 kilometres is another must-see place called Ahipara. This place is recommended as the most entertaining holiday sanctuary as well as a phenomenal adventure sports centre in the southern section of the beach.

You can drive through and experience the thrill of fast driving on drive-safaris, quad motor bike trips across the coast line and up north to the hills. Once you get the kick of the action happening here, you can also explore your adventure-buds doing land-yachting, hand-gliding, horse riding and tobogganing. Well, not to forget, the usual surfing, fishing and shell fish collecting.

There’s also a scrub covered wasteland called ‘Gumfields Historic Reserve’, which is just a small road above the Shipwreck Bay. This is apparently a haunted place, loaded with the paraphernalia of that time-zone, of the kauri resin, leaving just a single store in the region. The ancestral Dalmation diggers little did realize that Ahipara would be such a different place with so many activities to indulge in, much unlike the early Ahipara.
