White Island

White Island, Maori Whakaari, is a small uninhabited volcanic island of New Zealand located in the South Pacific Ocean, north of the island.

White Island in New Zealand is located in the Bay of Plenty on the open South Pacific Ocean, 48 kilometers from the coast of North Island. The island is 321 meters above sea level.

The island consists of two overlapping andesitic volcanoes of which there is a crater in the shape of a horseshoe open to the EST1 South.  Most eruptions are of type strombolian and produce phreato-magmatic explosions that cause a rapid change of bottom topography

In 1914, a crater wall collapsed and destroyed a sulfur mine under construction killing eleven workers, constituting one of the three largest volcanic disasters of New Zealand.
